Civil events of Hungarian citizens, such as birth, marriage, divorce, death - are  to be registered in Hungary, too. The certification of foreign civil events can be

- registered in every registry office in Hungary;

- abroad, at every consulate of the diplomatic missions.

Civil events have generally to be registered in person. The consulate in Bern is the responsible office to register birth, marriage, death and divorce and issue the Hungarian Certificate.

For the procedure in relation to the acquisition of Hungarian citizenship, as well as the determination of Hungarian citizenship, the registration of civil events must be submitted separately. No civil certificate is automatically issued.

The competent authority is:

Budapest Főváros Kormányhivatal

Állampolgársági és Anyakönyvezési Főosztály

Hazai Anyakonyvi Osztály

1056 Budapest, Váci utca 62-64.

e-mail: hazaianyakonyv@bfkh.gov.hu

International civil registry documents also have to be registered in Hungary (birth, marriage, divorce, death).

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that an original copy of the foreign document must be submitted and the authority will keep it.

If the foreign civil record is issued in German / English / French, no translation is required; all other foreign records can only be accepted for the procedure with a certified translation into Hungarian.

The process of the Hungarian civil registration is approximately 75 days.
