1. Passport entitling you to return home once

If the passport or ID card of a Hungarian citizen in Switzerland gets lost, stolen or damaged, he / she should report it to the police.

It is the citizens' own responsibility to track the expiration date of the passport or ID card. At the time of application, Hungarian citizenship should be proven. Proof of Hungarian citizenship may be provided with a valid passport, valid ID card, passport no longer than one year old, certificate of naturalization or citizenship certificate not older than three years. If you do not have any of the above mentioned documents and your nationality does not appear in the central register, you will need to have a citizenship certification process to prove your nationality.

The passport entitling to a return is issued on the day of application. The issuance of the provisional passport is subject to a charge.

2.  Passport for onward travel and stay

A provisional passport entitles you to continue your journey and your stay and can only be issued if certain statutory provisions have been met, exceptionally in particularly justified cases. (Proof of justification such as an employer's certificate or the receipt of a booked travel / air ticket must be provided.) Citizens who live permanently in Switzerland should apply for a normal passport.

Once you enter Hungary, the provisional passport does not entitle to any further trips abroad. We expressly point out that this travel document only entitles you to return home and must be handed over to a passport authority in Hungary within 5 working days. The departure from Hungary is therefore not possible before the issuance of a proper passport.

At the consular department there is no possibility to apply for an express passport. Information on the issue of a new Hungarian passport by express procedure can be obtained directly from the passport office in Budapest on + 36-1-550-1858 or in writing by e-mail: kozponti.okmanyiroda@mail.ahiv.hu .

A normal passport in express procedure (also within 24 hours) can be applied for exclusively at the passport authority in Budapest (1136 Budapest, Visegrádi utca 110-112).

Provisional passport for newborns and minors

For newborns and minors, parents can only apply for a passport that entitles them to return home only if the birth is going to be certified in Hungary. The parents have to sign a statement about it at the consulate.

Once you enter Hungary, the provisional passport does not entitle to any further trips abroad. We expressly point out that this travel document entitles you to return only once and must be handed over to a passport authority in Hungary within 5 working days. For this reason, it is not possible to leave Hungary before a proper passport is issued. In Hungary, a proper passport / ID card can be applied for if the birth of the child has been recorded in Hungary and the child has been entered in the civil status and address register.

The birth certificate in Hungary and the entry in the civil status and address register can take several months (3-4 months). For this reason, we suggest that you only apply for a provisional passport in particularly justified cases.

For the issuance of the provisional passport for newborns and minors, we need the same documents as for the application for the ordinary passport.
